New Season = New Commitments
1/5/2008

We have 3 commitments to announce! Milwaukee Sting 18 Gold player, Allyson Werner has committed to Ivy League, Columbia University. Milwaukee Sting 18 Black teammates, Cassy Marx and Christina DeGroot also made commitments recently. Both will be staying closer to home with Cassy joining the team at UW Parkside. Christina will be joining perennial DIII powerhouse UW Whitewater. Congratulations all three of you!

Now it's time for "University Fun Facts!"

  • Columbia University is home to "Orgo Night." One of the fun events of "Orgo Night" is for the band to serenade the student body of neighboring Barnard college who, in turn, show their respect by pelting them with trash from the dorm rooms above. All biodegradable trash I'm sure. Oddly enough, Columbia has a bang up psychology department specializing in healthy self-image assessment….
  • For you closet parasitic worm fanatics Acanthocephalus parksidei is named after UW Parkside.
  • Of the "Notables" listed for Whitewater at Wikipedia.org is a guy who has been attending school since 1994. It's rumored school officials are considering changing the school motto from "Stay Close, Go Far" to "Here, Just Leave."

  • Gabrielsen WI Gatorade P.O.Y.
    12/13/2007

The post H.S. season has it's share of rewards as Sting 18 Gold member, Janelle Gabrielsen is finding out. She has been announced the Gatorade Player of the Year for the state of Wisconsin. Nelly joins a list of Milwaukee Sting athletes to carry that honor over the last 13 seasons. In fact, of the last 13 years the G.P.O.Y. has come from Milwaukee Sting 11 times. A list that includes current coach, Jess Holly.

  • Sting Welcomes Kevin Lane
    11/08/2007

Milwaukee Sting is very pleased to introduce our new Managing Director, Kevin Lane. Kevin comes to Milwaukee Sting by way of a very rich volleyball coaching background. Kevin's most recent job title was with the University of Notre Dame where he was a volunteer assistant coach. He also headed up the U17 program with the Munciana Club out of Muncie, IN where his responsibilities included organizing team and tournament scheduling as well as assisting players with the recruting process.

Kevin has also been an assitant for NCAA DI Indiana Purdue University - Fort Wayne (IPFW). He began his coaching career back in 2001 at Northrup High School in Ft. Wayne, IN where he was the varsity assistant coach. Along with his work during the volleyball season(s) over the last 6 years, Kevin has also worked as a court coach for USAV's JNT/YNT trouts and has done camps for Notre Dame, Purdue and Wisconsin. As a player, Kevin was a Middle Blocker for the US Army Hanau Volleyball Team.

In his freetime, Kevin enjoys needlepoint and water color paintings specializing in roadkill abstracts. "It's an un-tapped niche…and I've never been good with painting animals so it's a perfect fit," says Kevin. He can also be heard pontificating why ovaltine is called ovaltine and expressing his concerns over the obesity of whales. Kevin is also a Seinfeld fan.

Welcome to the Sting family, Kevin. We are excited to have you aboard.
